Let your child benefit from saving in a Child Trust Fund
If your child was born on or after September 1st 2002, you will have received a free voucher worth £250 from the HM Revenue and Customs when you claimed your Child Benefit. You can use this voucher to start a Family Investments savings account for your child. Child Trust Funds help your child benefit from tax advantages, and you'll be joining the parents of over 550,000 children who are already watching their child benefit from our savings scheme.
How it works
You can simply invest your £250 voucher in our stakeholder Child Trust Fund, which invests the money in a mixture of shares and bonds with the aim of growing your money. Together with the government top-up of £250 when your child is 7, a Child Trust Fund could be worth £1000* to your 18 year-old child. Benefits can be enhanced with monthly top-ups. Add £10 a month and your child could enjoy a pay-out of £4500* at 18. Add £20 a month and it could be worth £8,000*.
Remember, if your circumstances change, you can increase, decrease or stop saving at any time. The money remains in the account where only your child will be able to access it, and only at age 18.
*The figures shown assume that investments grow at 6.75% per year over a full investment period of 18 years and include annual charges of 1.5% (the calculations are not exact). These figures are illustrative, not guaranteed, and their future buying power would be affected by inflation. Our account invests in shares so its value can fall as well as rise. A child could receive back less than was paid in.
Can any child benefit from the Child Trust Fund?
You can help any eligible child benefit from savings with our Child Trust Funds. You won't have the government vouchers, but you can make monthly contributions for grandchildren, relatives or friend's children, and your chosen child could benefit from a worthwhile lump sum when they reach 18 years old.
