The Child Trust Fund

Family Investments are the UK’s favourite Child Trust Fund provider with 1.1 million accounts.

What is a Child Trust Fund?

If your baby is born before January 1st 2011, resident in the UK, and eligible for Child Benefit, you’ll receive a free Child Trust Fund (CTF) voucher from the Government.

You’ll need to use this voucher to open a Child Trust Fund account for your child. Then you - as well as your family and friends - can add up to £1,200 a year to the account.

All the money paid in to the account belongs to your child, so only they can access it and only when they’re 18, giving them a little bit extra to support them when they’re ready to take on the world.

On 24th May 2010 the Government announced that it intends to reduce and then stop all Government contributions to Child Trust Funds. Click here for more information about the changes and how they will affect you and your child .

The Family Investments Child Trust Fund

We offer a Stakeholder Child Trust Fund account which invests in shares, and gives you a choice of investment funds:

  • Our Stakeholder Child Trust Fund
  • Our Ethical Stakeholder Child Trust Fund

A Stakeholder Child Trust Fund account is the type of account the Government will automatically choose for you if you don’t invest your child’s voucher within 12 months.

This kind of account meets all of the Government’s guidelines, which are aimed to try and reduce the risk of investing in shares and which cap the annual management charge at 1.5%, although this doesn’t mean that the Stakeholder account is suitable for everyone or that returns are guaranteed.

You should remember that because the account invests in stocks and shares that its value can fall as well as rise and your child could get back less than was paid in.

There are various types of accounts available – Stakeholder, and non-Stakeholder Cash or Equity accounts – from a variety of providers. If you’re interested in checking out the different options available, you can find more information on the Government’s Child Trust Fund website.
